Stump Grinding in Knoxville and East Tennessee

Stump grinding and stump removal in Knoxville, Maynardville and across East Tennessee, ground out below grade without tearing up your lawn. Free estimates, 865-360-6685.

The stump is the part that stays. The tree is gone, the brush is chipped, and there is still a knee-high reminder in the middle of the yard: a trip hazard, a thing to mow around, a magnet for sucker sprouts and carpenter ants. You stop seeing it after a while. A buyer’s home inspector will not.

We grind stumps two ways. Some folks just want stumps gone, whether that is an old one from a removal years back or a row another company cut flush and left behind. That is its own job and we will quote it on its own. And when we take a tree down ourselves, we can grind the stump before the crew leaves, so the whole thing is handled in one visit. We do a bit of both.

The machine is on wheels, and that is deliberate. Our grinder is a Rayco RG55, and we chose the wheeled machine over a tracked one for a simple reason: tracks can chew up a lawn just getting to the stump. Wide, low-pressure tires carry it across soft ground without leaving ruts, and it runs from a wireless remote, so the operator stands clear with a full view of the cut. That matters when the stump sits next to a flower bed, a fence or a foundation. At about three feet wide with the controls and blade folded in, it fits through a standard backyard gate. No fence panels come down.

Before we grind, Tennessee 811 gets called. Grinding goes below grade, which makes it digging as far as the utility companies are concerned. So we put in the free 811 locate ahead of the work, and the utilities come out and mark any buried lines. That covers the public lines; we will also ask you about the private ones, like irrigation, landscape lighting or a buried dog fence, before the wheel touches dirt. We are licensed and insured, and this is exactly the kind of work where that should matter to you.

Flying chips stay inside the fence. A grinding wheel throws chips hard, so before it spins up we set a debris containment barrier around the stump: a portable fence of framed netting that stops chips before they reach a window, the siding or a parked car. Everything stays inside it, which also makes the cleanup shorter.

How deep, and what is left. We grind the stump out below grade, up to fourteen inches down where it is needed. That is deep enough to seed grass or lay sod over the spot. The roots beyond the stump stay and break down on their own over a few years; nobody digs those out of a lawn. For most trees, grinding below grade is the end of it, though a few stubborn species will try to sprout from the roots for a season. The grindings go back in the hole unless you want them somewhere else. We ask first.

Roots are their own job, billed their own way. If surface roots are heaving the lawn or catching the mower, we can grind those down too. Root work is priced differently than stumps for an honest reason: chasing roots means running the wheel through the surrounding soil, and soil hides rocks in a way a stump does not. Rock is what breaks grinder teeth, so root work carries that risk in its price. We will look at it during the estimate and quote it plainly.

If you want it perfect. A hole filled with grindings settles as the chips break down, and a small mound now becomes a shallow dip in a couple of years. For an additional charge we will haul the chips off and backfill with screened topsoil instead, level and ready to seed the day we leave. Worth it when the stump sits in the middle of a lawn you care about.
