# Three big backyard trees in a September heat wave

Halls · September 2026

Three big trees in one back yard, a red oak, a cedar and a hackberry, and all three coming out completely.

None of them was a hard tree on its own. There was no house under them, no power line, no septic field to route around. What made it a big job was the size of it: three large trees across a wide yard, and the week they landed in. It was September, the heat had not broken, and every day of the job ran into the 90s.

The lift did the cutting. It came off the truck at the curb and tracked back across the lawn on ground protection mats, which keep the tracks from scuffing and tearing up the grass.

Day one was the red oak. From the basket it was limbed out first, all the way down to a bare trunk, and then the trunk was taken off in chunks from the top and dropped to the ground piece by piece. One of the clips on this page is those chunks coming off.

Day two was the other two. The cedar in the corner by the shed was limbed out from the lift the same way, then the hackberry, until all three trees were on the ground and the wood was stacked in piles across the yard.

The cutting was the easy part. Every piece the lift brought down still had to be picked up, and in that heat, loading all of it with the tractor was what wore on us. The brush went through the chipper. The hardwood went on the truck.

The last half day was cleanup: the final pieces hauled off and the yard left clear. The stumps were cut flush. The tall tree still standing by the shed in the after photo was never part of the job. It is on the neighbor's side of the fence.

The customer liked the wood and has woodworking plans for it, so a couple of the chunks were kept back and sliced into pieces sized for tabletops or furniture. Those stayed. Everything else left the property.

## Photos and clips

- Job completed with the yard cleaned up. The customer asked for slices of the chunks. We left a couple slices on each chunk
- Red oak limbed out, only the trunk remaining
- Limbing out the cedar tree in the corner
- Positioning lift next to the red oak in preparation for removing the tree
- All trees felled, hardwood and cleanup remaining.
- Nearing the end of day two, with all trees felled and wood stacked into piles in preparation for hauling off the next day
- Unloading the lift from the truck at the start of the job
- Moving the lift onto the customer's yard, we use the ground protection mats to protect the lawn from scuff marks and tearing from the tracks of the lift.
- In the lift, removing the trunk of the red oak piece by piece
