# A fence taken apart to reach a backyard hardwood

Norris · July 2026

The homeowner took part of their own fence down before the crew arrived. That was agreed in advance, and it was the condition the whole job ran on: there was no getting the lift into the back yard otherwise, and there was no taking this tree down without the lift.

It was a large hardwood in the back yard, grown in close enough that the roof sat inside its reach. Felling it whole was never on the table. It came apart in sections off the lift, with what was left of the fenceline tight on one side and the roof tight on the other.

Ground protection mats went down before the lift moved onto the grass. All the brush and all the hardwood were carried behind the fenceline and left there. The homeowner kept the wood, so none of it went into a truck. One day on site.

Norris has held Tree City USA standing for decades and manages its trees under a written plan, which tends to mean the people living there already know what they are looking at. This one came out because it had grown into the house, not because it was in the way of anything.
