# Cherry, dead pine and a Bradford pear left standing

Fountain City · July 2026

Three items on one lot, and the first problem was not a tree at all. It was the lawn.

The cherry stood at the end of the house, and the only hard surface to stage from was the driveway. Getting the spider lift to the tree meant crossing turf. So ground protection mats were laid across the route and the lift walked over them. A machine tracked straight across grass leaves marks that outlast the stump.

Then the work itself:

- **The cherry at the end of the house.** Taken down from the lift, in sections, off the roofline. Wood of firewood diameter was cut into sixteen-inch lengths and left for the homeowner. Everything smaller went through the chipper.
- **A mostly dead pine at the back edge of the yard.** Brush chipped. The trunk pieces too big for the chipper were carried out in the round.
- **The Bradford pear at the opposite rear corner.** Pruned, not removed. The limbs that were touching the house came off, and the interior verticals were thinned to open the crown up.

All the chips stayed at the rear of the property rather than going out on the truck, which is what the homeowner wanted.

A word on that pear, because it is the tree you will hear about again. Bradford pear puts most of its main limbs off the trunk at roughly the same height and at a tight angle, with bark pinched into the union instead of solid wood. It holds together fine for a long while and then starts coming apart in halves, usually in wind, usually somewhere between thirty and sixty years old. Thinning the interior takes weight off and buys time. It does not change how the tree is built, and you are better off hearing that now than after the split.
