# Tree service in West Knoxville

West Hills, Karns and Hardin Valley are three different situations rather than one. West Hills was laid out on farmland in the mid-1950s and its shade trees are of a generation with the streets, while Karns and Hardin Valley are the growing end of Knox County, built out recently and still building — and the gap between a canopy near the end of its life and one that has barely started is most of what decides what a tree job out here turns out to be. UT Extension puts the newer case plainly: developed properties on former agricultural land are devoid of shade trees, owners want shade quickly, and the fast-growing trees that go in have weak and brittle wood that breaks in wind and ice storms at the junction of branch and trunk. Silver maple, Bradford pear and Leyland cypress are named by name, and all three are trees we have taken down elsewhere. Power lines are the constant across all of it, and here is the part most people do not know — the service line from the pole to your house is the homeowner's responsibility, not the utility's, but KUB will come out and lower it at no charge so the work can be done safely.
